The short version
- You can use Disease Weather without giving us your name or email.
- If you join the Disease Weather+ list, we keep your email and the answers you give us.
- We send news only if you check the box that asks for it.
- We do not sell your information.
- You can stop emails or remove your information at any time.
Who we are
Disease Weather is made by Orbient LLC, a company in Cranston, Rhode Island, in the United States. When this page says “we,” it means Orbient.
To reach us about privacy, email hello@orbient.com.
What we collect
When you look at Disease Weather
- Your location, if you share it or search for a place. We use it to show conditions for that area. We do not save it to an account or link it to your name or email.
- Visit counts. We use a tool called Umami to count visits and see which parts of the site people use. It does not use cookies and does not tell us who you are. It records things like the page, the language, and the campaign link you came from.
- Settings on your device. Your browser saves a few choices, such as a notice you closed. These stay on your device.
When you join the Disease Weather+ list
- Your email address.
- The watch or ring you use, if you tell us.
- Your ZIP code, if you choose to add it.
- Whether you asked for news, the date you asked, and the wording you agreed to.
- How you found us, such as which printed card or link you used.
The form does not ask about your health. We do not save your IP address or your device’s location. We do save the country your connection comes from, so we know which privacy rules apply to you. To stop spam, a scrambled form of your IP address is held for one minute and then deleted.
Other companies that help run the site
To show the site, your browser connects to a few services. Like any website, they see your IP address when they send you their part of the page.
- Cloudflare delivers the site and stores the Disease Weather+ list.
- Umami counts visits.
- Google Fonts supplies the typefaces.
- Stadia Maps supplies the map.
- Public data sources, such as the National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency, supply conditions for the place you look up.
How we use it
- To show you conditions for the place you share or search.
- To tell you when Disease Weather+ opens, if you joined the list.
- To send you Disease Weather news and tips, including news for your area, only if you checked the box.
- To make Disease Weather better, using visit counts that do not identify you.
We send email only with your consent. Joining the Disease Weather+ list and asking for news are two separate choices.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your information. We do not share it for advertising.
We share it only with companies that help us run Disease Weather, such as the ones listed above, and only so they can do that work. When we begin sending email, we will use an email service to deliver it. We may also share information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your request for news | 12 months. Before it ends, we ask if you still want news. If you do not say yes, the news stops. |
| Your place on the Disease Weather+ list | Until Disease Weather+ opens and we invite you. If you do not join, we delete your details within 90 days of the invite. We never keep a place on the list longer than 12 months from the day you join. |
| Your ZIP code | As long as your request for news is active. We delete it when you stop the news. |
| The do-not-contact list | If you stop the news or ask to be removed, we keep your email on this list so we do not add you again by mistake. |
| Copies | We do not keep our own backup copies of the list. When something is deleted, it can take about a minute to clear everywhere on Cloudflare’s network. |
Your choices
These apply to everyone, wherever you live.
- Stop the news. Use the link in any email we send, or go to diseaseweather.com/unsubscribe. It takes effect right away.
- Remove your information. Choose “Remove me completely” on the same page. It takes effect right away. If you email us instead, we finish within 30 days.
- See or fix what we have. Email us from the address you signed up with and we will send you a copy or correct it.
- Change your mind. You can take back your consent at any time. It does not change what we did before you took it back.
If you ask to be removed and later sign up again, we will tell you that you asked to be removed and ask if you are sure you want to join again.
We will not treat you differently for using any of these choices.
If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom
Disease Weather is run from the United States, and your information is handled there. We rely on your consent to keep your email and send you messages. You have the choices listed above, and you can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Health information
Disease Weather gives general wellness information about conditions in an area. It is not medical advice and does not diagnose or treat any condition. The site and the Disease Weather+ list do not ask for your health details. Disease Weather+ will have its own privacy notice when it opens.
Children
Disease Weather is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you think a child gave us an email address, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes to this page
If we change how we handle your information, we will update this page and the date at the top. If the change is a big one and we have your email, we will tell you.
