The EHI fuses air quality, disease burden, and environmental conditions into a 0–100 score. Lower is healthier.

How Disease Weather works

What does the Environmental Health Index mean?

The Environmental Health Index (EHI) is one number from 0 to 100 that sums up the conditions around a place right now. Lower is better.

  • 0 to 24: Low
  • 25 to 49: Medium
  • 50 to 74: High
  • 75 to 100: Very high

It combines three groups: Your Environment (air quality and pollen), Your Community (cold and flu activity) and Environmental Conditions (weather). How much each group counts changes with the season.

The index describes conditions, not people. It does not tell you whether you will get sick, and it is not medical advice.

What can you check for your location?

  • Air quality: the air quality score, small particles (PM2.5) and ozone.
  • Pollen: today’s pollen level.
  • Cold and flu activity: how much flu-like illness doctors are seeing, and whether it is rising or falling.
  • Wastewater and ER visits: CDC’s wastewater levels for flu, COVID and RSV, and the share of ER visits for them, for your state. These are shown for context and are not part of the index yet.
  • Weather: temperature, moisture in the air, wind and current conditions.
  • Alerts: National Weather Service warnings for your area.

Search any US city or ZIP code, or use your location.

How current is the information?

  • Air quality and weather: every hour.
  • Pollen: every day.
  • Cold and flu activity: every week, for your state.
  • Mosquito and tick season: every month, from seasonal patterns.
  • Weather alerts: checked about every minute.

Each panel shows when it last updated. If a source does not answer, that row shows a dash instead of a guess. If flu data can’t be reached, the flu rows show an estimate for the time of year, marked “Seasonal estimate.” Wastewater levels and ER visits come from CDC once a week.

Where does the data come from?

Air quality & weather updated hourly · Pollen updated daily · Disease activity updated weekly (CDC ILINet, CDC wastewater, CDC ER visits) · Vector-borne risk updated monthly (seasonal proxy).

Data sources: EPA AirNow · OpenAQ / EPA AQS (PM2.5, AQI) · Open-Meteo CAMS · ECMWF IFS · Google Pollen API · CDC ILINet via Delphi Epidata · CDC NWSS wastewater · CDC NSSP ER visits · CDC ArboNET historical (Lyme, West Nile, EEE) · NOAA CPC ENSO · NWS CAP API · RainViewer radar · WHO Disease Outbreak News · USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory & Hawaiʻi DOH (linked advisories).
